Choose Lavished Grace Print

“In him we have redemption, through his blood, the forgiveness of sins in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us….”  Ephesians 1:7-8

Lavished is a great word.  It comes from a French word which means a downpour of rain.  Have you ever been lavished with something?  I remember during a period of illness in my life, people from my church were encouraged to send me  cards.  I have never received so many cards in my life!  I also remember attending a spiritual weekend where the theme was grace.  During the weekend, I was served by a team of people that far outnumbered the people attending the retreat.  At every session, gifts were piled on the tables in front of us.  The saying that was repeated over and over was, “It just keeps getting better!”

This word, lavish, is used here in Ephesians to describe God’s grace.  He lavished us with grace!  It is a downpour.  It is enough to wash away our sin, our guilt, our shame, our inadequacies, our past and our old sinful nature.  It is easy for us to focus on what we have not received in life, and certainly we all have hopes and dreams for things that have not yet happened.  But today, why not think of all of the ways that God has lavished His grace on us.  Let’s picture ourselves standing in a downpour of grace from God!  Choose grace!
